Youth Sports
The Powhatan County Parks and Recreation Department sponsors or co-sponsors numerous youth leagues that offer a variety of sports. The department, in cooperation with county schools, provides the facilities necessary for the operation of these leagues.

The Parks & Recreation Department is now offering a new format to
help CHILDREN AGES 5 - 10 learn and play the exciting game of
tennis! The sizes of the courts, equipment and even the net height have
been decreased to make learning easier for children. These changes will
ensure the success of all participants, even if he/she have never picked
up a racquet!
MIDDLE SCHOOL TENNIS
Wednesdays 5:00 - 5:50 Starting April 7 for 6 weeks
$50.00 per student
Students in the middle program will learn and review the fundamental
of strokes: forehand, backhand, volley, serve and rules of the game.
Tennis is a sport for all ages and students will be encouraged to learn at
their own pace and skill level. Students will be challenged by both
drills and practice matches.
An exciting new play format for learning tennis, designed to bring young kids into the game by utilizing specialized equipment, shorter court dimensions, foam type ball that moves slower, bounces lower and travels less. The program is divided into three different age levels: ages 5-6, 7-8 and ages 9-10. Dates to be announced.
Powhatan Youth Athletic Association (PYAA)
“Promoting Citizenship through Sports” - The purpose of this organization shall be: To promote the development of strong character, a right attitude and a sense of responsibility and citizenship in youngsters, using organized sports as a vehicle. It is the purpose of Powhatan Youth Athletic Association to achieve this goal through fair play, good sportsmanship and congenial fellowship, with adult leaders providing the example.

Football – (PYAA) Chesterfield Quarterback League (CQL)
Are you ready for some football? This is your opportunity to experience the thrilling sport of tackle football in a recreational setting. Focus is on learning the fundamentals of football, teaching personal and team goals and having fun in the process. Teams are fielded through the PYAA Football. Cheerleading (PYAA)
The Youth Cheerleading program is open to ages 5 – 14 and coincides with the Youth Football program. Participants cheer at Chesterfield Quarterback League football games. Fall Baseball (PYAA) Play Ball (again)!
Extend your summer baseball fun into the fall! PYAA proudly presents a competitive fun and affordable fall youth baseball league for boys. This league emphasizes the fundamentals of baseball while provide a fun competitive environment that challenges and improve the skill level of all players. County wide youth program for ages 5 - 19. PSA’s Recreational Soccer League
The emphasis of the Recreational Program is on development of soccer skills including kicking, dribbling, scoring, goal-keeping and ect.. The recreation league is open to all interested players, ages 5 – 15. Players of all abilities and experience are encouraged to participate. Recreational players play at least half of every game. Most teams practice only one day per week, and most games are players on Saturdays. Fall and Spring seasons are each approximately eight games long. At the end of each season, a tournament is held. Powhatan Fury (Travel Soccer)
The Powhatan Fury program was formed to train area players to play competitive soccer. Our objective is to develop our players to perform well at the high school and collegiate levels. Powhatan Fury teams play in the Advanced Development Soccer League (ADSL) and Virginia Soccer League Inc. (VSL). Each of these leagues is a member of the Virginia Youth Soccer Association (VYSA). The ADSL is a developmental league, a step above recreational soccer. They compete with teams in the greater Richmond area and typically field teams at the U9 to U11 ages. VSL is a state-wide league which has various age groups (up to U18) and competitive levels ranging from classic to premier. During the spring season VSL fields teams up to U14. VSL teams compete throughout Central Virginia, Tidewater, and Virginia Beach.

Powhatan Fury Games
Games are usually played on Saturdays, and occasionally on Sunday’s. Teams play from 8 to 10 games per season and many teams participate in one or more tournaments during a season. Typically half of the games are played on Powhatan’s home field at Fighting Creek Park, with the remainder of the games played in the general Richmond area. Occasionally, teams will travel to Newport News, Virginia Beach, Fredericksburg or Lynchburg. Teams play games ranging from 25 to 45 minute halves depending upon age group. Scores and team rankings of ADSL games are not tracked. VSL games are scored and official team rankings are maintained by the league.
Powhatan Wrestling Club “Blackhawk Wrestling”
Wrestling is one of the oldest sports known to man and was included in the first Olympic Games. It is a sport that emphasizes discipline, quickness, balance, strength, flexibility and intelligence. Participants will learn the fundamentals of the sport including take downs, reversals, pinning combinations and counters. Wrestlers will be paired by age and size.
Practices will include conditioning, stretching, technique instructions and live wrestling. This is collegiate style wrestling, not the WWF stuff you see on TV. The Blackhawk Wrestling Program works hand in hand with the Powhatan High School team to ensure a smooth transition. Spaces are limited so please register early! Registration start October 1, 2000 for youth Ages 5 – 14 (8th grade). The program is operated by and coached by Mike Walter with state and collegiate champion coaches Rich Fitzsimmons and Chad VanBuskirk assisting. Powhatan Youth Basketball Powhatan YMCA
Powhatan Family YMCA sponsors several youth basketball programs for youth. Registration starts in October, and games being in January.
